Just thought I’d say hi and share my story about scoliosis. I had a 98 degree “S” curve and was told that if I did not get a fusion, I would probably be dead or in a wheelchair by 21. I had my first surgery in 1984. I was 14 years old. They first went in through the side anterior and took out a rib and took out the discs. I had a halo device attached to my head with 80 pounds if I remember correctly on it after two weeks, they then went in and did the fusion on my back. They also took a bone graph from my right hip. They were only able to get me to 48° I turned 15 in the hospital the day before the second half of my surgery they thought I was going to be in a body cast, but I was not. I had my surgery in November and was back to high school in January later on in life around 34 my legs started to go numb. So I found a new doctor and I had to have multiple tests done, but they found out I had severe spinal stenosis and other issues that I can’t spell or say so they rushed me pretty much for another back surgery they had to go in literally saw off part of my previous fusion and add on. I am now fused from T2-S1. In 2009 my arms were going numb so I had to have a neck fusion. I believe it was C3 to C4. The next year. I had the same problem so they went back in and did C4 to C5 a couple years later same issue so now I am fused from C3 to C6. I was still in a lot of pain so a few years ago they went back in and did a laminectomy between C7 and T1. Needless to say I am on disability and I have been since 34. I am now 52. Somewhere in between all that I had hardware removal done because the screws were backing out and poking through the skin because I’m thin. I have a lot of pain and muscle pain still during my first operation. I forgot to mention I had a halo device connected to me. I can’t walk or sit for a very long without being in pain. It sucks but I do the best I can with what I’ve got to work with.
