New to the game. Tips?

I'm new to the game.... What are some things I need to know. I just got up to the Oger and he keeps killing me. Also ... Not sure what it's called I'm used to dark souls... Is this money? Or what? When I did it seems like I lose half .. is there any way to recover it? I feel like I'm not making progress when I die because I lose everything.
